Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) recently launched its latest report: “From Darkness to Darkness” How Nigerians are paying the Price for Corruption in the Electricity Sector.

The report documents the total estimated financial loss to Nigeria from corruption in the electricity sector starting from the return to democracy in 1999 to date.

The report details the power sector privatization scandal, and highlights various outstanding cases of corruption in the power sector and unimplemented corruption reports in the sector. These include the N3 billion alleged scam by former NERC Commissioners; N5.2 billion of the Rural Electrification Agency’s fund allegedly misappropriated by former Senate Committee Chairman on Power; the case of the Ramsome Owan-led NERC; the AEDC Recruitment Scandal/Jumbo Pay Scandal; the Elemelu report on the Rural Electrification scandal, cases of award of electricity contracts under the misplaced guise of “Constituency Project”, among many other widespread and systemic cases of corruption in the electricity sector.
