Invitation to the launch of SERAP’s Latest report

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) is pleased to invite the public to the launch of its latest report: “Letting the Big Fish Swim” How Those Accused of High-Level Corruption are Getting away with their Crimes and Profiting from Nigeria’s Legacy of Impunity.

SERAP is a non-profit, nonpartisan, legal and advocacy organization devoted to promoting transparency, accountability and respect for socio-economic rights in Nigeria. SERAP received the Wole Soyinka Anti-Corruption Defender Award in 2014. It has also been nominated for the UN Civil Society Award and Ford Foundation’s Jubilee Transparency Award. SERAP serves as one of two Sub-Saharan African civil society representatives on the UNCAC Coalition, a global anti-corruption network of over 310 civil society organizations (CSOs) in over 100 countries.

The report gathers and evaluates data of concluded and ongoing high profile corruption cases in Nigeria between 2000 and 2017. It also details high profile corruption offenders in Nigeria are treated differently by the criminal justice system as compared to the street level, economically and politically marginalized offenders who are efficiently sentenced to prison.

The report makes several recommendations to the government of President Muhammadu Buhari, the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Judiciary, Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Economic and Financial Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related offences (ICPC), National Assembly, Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) / Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) on how to address the problem and take the government’s fight against corruption to the next level in terms of efficient and effective investigation and prosecution of those charged with high-profile corruption as well as justice for victims of corruption in the country.
