Court Grants SERAP permission to sue FG over spending of N800bn recovered loot

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday granted SERAP the permission to pursue our case seeking to compel President Buhari, the Attorney General of the Federation  and Finance Minister to disclose spending of N800bn recovered loot, names of people from whom the money is recovered & date of recovery, etc.

Hon. Justice Evelyn Maha also granted permission to SERAP to pursue our case seeking to compel President Buhari to direct anti-corruption agencies to promptly and thoroughly investigate allegations that payments totalling N51 billion were made into individual accounts in 2019.

The Court also ordered that Motion on Notice be served on all the Respondents within eight days of the order, together with hearing notices.

The suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/1064/2020 is adjourned to 16th February, 2021 for hearing of the substantive suit.

The President had in paragraph 78 of his speech to mark the occasion of the Democracy Day on June 12, 2020, stated that: “the government has recovered looted funds in excess of N800 billion. These monies are being ploughed into development and infrastructure projects.”

Joined in the suit as respondents are Abubakar Malami, Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, and Zainab Ahmed, Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning.
