SERAP holds Interactive Session on Management of Resources in Niger Delta
Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project [SERAP], on September 20, 2023, organised an interactive session on implementing reforms for promoting transparency and accountability in the management of public resources in the Niger Delta.
The interactive session which brought together senior executive members of Ministries, Department and Agencies [MDAs], members of the Nigeria Guild of Editors [NGE], government representatives, High Chiefs, Community and religious leaders of the Niger Delta, and members of diplomatic community.
Among the people who attended the event are: the Director-General of the Bureau of Public Service Reform[BPSR], Dr. Dasuki Arabi; President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, Mr. Eze Anaba; Legal Director at the National Human Rights Commission [NHRC] , Fatima Sahamaki; Senior Policy Adviser to the Governor of Delta State , Rt. Hon. Funkekeme Solomon; Representative of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Madam Grace.
The Director-General of Bureau of Public Service Reform, Dr. Dasuki Arabi, in a keynote speech, emphasised the strategic importance of the Niger Delta and the various administrations’ efforts to develop the region, including the establishment of a ministry, the NDDC and amnesty programme.
Presenting the report titled “We are all vulnerable: How Lack of Transparency and Accountability is Fueling Human Rights Violations in the Niger Delta”, Dr. Olubunmi Afinowi noted that the government, oil and gas companies, and all other players must take concerted efforts to recognize the right to a clean and healthy environment and set up a framework towards its actualization first in the Niger Delta, and in Nigeria as a whole.
Participants at the event noted the need to draw attention of the government to challenges facing communities in the Niger Delta, promote increased demand for transparency and accountability in the management of resources in the region through media report and agenda setting, and encourage citizens’ participation in the fight against corruption.
